Working with them has inspired these four tips for making the big transition with confidence:

The Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates, Inc. (COPAA) is an independent, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization of attorneys, advocates and parents. Our primary mission is to secure high quality educational services for children with disabilities.

COPAA is premised on the belief that the key to effective educational programs for children with disabilities is collaboration -as equals- by parents and educators.

COPAA is premised on the belief that the key to effective educational programs for children with disabilities is collaboration -as equals- by parents and educators. This is the premise of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act, the federal statutes that guarantee children with disabilities a free, appropriate public education.

COPAA was formed in 1998 and works to:

Enable parents to work more effectively with school personnel to plan and obtain effective educational programs for their children with disabilities;

Encourage more attorneys and advocates to undertake representation of parents of children with disabilities in their efforts to plan and obtain effective educational programs;

Provide advocate, attorney, parent and other professional COPAA members with the practical resources and information they need to obtain effective educational programs for students with disabilities;

Enable members to network and share information and legal resources;

Provide training for lay advocates on all aspects of special education advocacy and informal conflict resolution;

Provide training for attorneys on legal practice: including due process, litigation, and informal conflict resolution;

Enable parents to locate advocates and attorneys through COPAA’s website directory;

Files amicus curiae briefs in cases of national significance.

The organization does not provide direct services, individual advocacy or representation to children with disabilities. COPAA does not limit its interest to any particular type of disability. Rather, COPAA’s chief concern is that parents of children with disabilities have equal access to established legal protections by ensuring the availability and quality of legal and advocacy resources for parents of children with all types of disabilities.

Bodin is an educational consulting and psychological testing group that has served clients locally, nationally and internationally since 1979. In that time we have seen thousands of clients with a broad spectrum of issues. These issues have ranged from learning differences, such as attention and memory disorders, to emotional and behavioral difficulties, such as defiance at home, at school or in the community.

Our mission is success for our students. We assess with care and thoroughness their goals, talents and challenges. We help families create a plan for appropriate educational programs and treatment interventions, guiding them in identifying and considering the many factors that make up a successful plan. In building the plan, we incorporate input from multiple sources including family members, professionals with whom the student has worked and the student him- or herself. We also review any prior assessments, school records and other pertinent data.

While our primary focus is the special needs child, adolescent and young adult, we also provide traditional, private, boarding and college placement services. We accept no program referral fees for our work with students, thereby maintaining the integrity of our relationship with each family.

CLE’s individualized support complements students’ higher education goals and prepares them to transition confidently to independent adulthood.

Services
Only College Living Experience offers a complete network of comprehensive services. The ongoing support of resident advisors, tutors, mentors, psychologists, academic liaisons, site directors and others helps students become more self-sufficient, more independent and more confident. The result – students are empowered to advocate for themselves, they master the skills needed to live independently, they are prepared to make daily life decisions and they develop rewarding and appropriate relationships with peers and adults.

Students who haven’t completed high school can earn an accredited diploma at College Living Experience. At some locations, they can earn high school and college credits at the same time. Students travel from all over the world to attend one of six CLE centers in Austin, Texas; Chicago; Denver; Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Monterey, Calif.; and Washington, D.C.

Academics
College Living Experience provides students with comprehensive academic support starting with applying, enrolling and registering for classes. Experienced professional tutors provide additional support, and students who haven’t completed high school can earn an accredited diploma at College Living Experience. At some locations, they can earn high school and college credits at the same time.

Independent Living Skills
College Living Experience students master the skills required to live independently. Perhaps more important, they acquire the judgment to make sound decisions about daily life.

College Living Experience students share an apartment near campus with a roommate. With coaching from an independent living skills instructor, they learn to use public transportation, manage their money, pay bills, shop for groceries and prepare meals, clean their apartments and do their laundry.

A resident advisor who lives in or near the apartments is joined by other staff who facilitate social activities and help students navigate daily life. Each student has a mentor, typically a graduate student in psychology, who gives students the opportunity to put their skills into practice so they develop confidence and independence. If issues arise, a dedicated team – including a director, a psychologist, tutors, a mentor and a resident assistant – comes together to provide emotional and social support.

While achieving independence is the goal, many parents want to be kept informed of their child’s progress. College Living Experience staff provide progress reports and communicate regularly with parents.

Social Skills
College Living Experience students receive the support they need to make – and be – a friend. Facilitated opportunities to become comfortable in social situations and develop appropriate, fulfilling relationships with peers and adults set the stage for future encounters that are successful and satisfying. Social skills support includes a weekly group led by the staff psychologist in which students talk about issues such as stress management, coping skills and other topics. Students also meet regularly with their College Living Experience case manager to talk about their progress, assess their independence and make sure they are successful and engaged. Students experience social life off campus, too, by participating in outings and events with College Living Experience staff.

Our mission is to provide financial support for the college educational needs of individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome, Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities, High-Functioning Autism and other Learning Differences, whose families are unable to afford the costs and are not eligible for support from outside means such as government grants. The SEDFund also supports professional development of faculty and staff responsible for the education and services required for those individuals it serves.

SEDFund Does Two Things:

Provides financial aid to learning differenced students who will truly benefit from receiving it.

Provides professional staff training opportunities for educators.

Our Beliefs
Young people with learning differences have so much to offer the world. They are often under-employed, because of their lack of social understanding and competency. They often live lives of isolation (with or without a college degree). Self-knowledge and understanding is the key that can unlock the door to an open life.
